Naming. Signed by Philip Levine. Signed Limited Edition. Sutton Hoo Press. Winona, 2004.

$230.00

Philip Levine is one of the most celebrated American poets of his generation. He was honored with the Pulitzer Prize, the National Book Award for Poetry (twice), the Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, and many other awards. He was also the United States Poet Laureate in 2011-2012. His work is noted for its colloquialisms, its narrative progressions, its unflinching eye on familial and working class themes. In Naming, these qualities and other deeply American aspects of life, language, and music adorn dozens of stanzas, making it a rich display of some of Levine’s best work. This signed limited edition is also noteworthy for its fine craftsmanship and scarcity. Published by the Sutton Hoo Press, an exceptional private press operating in rural Minnesota, this volume of Naming represents the necessary skill and artistry of the centuries’ old craft of bookmaking, brought into the 21st century.

This scarce signed limited edition from the Sutton Hoo Press is in fine condition. It is one of around 200 copies printed from Bembo types on dampened hand-made India Bond paper and bound between boards with a link-stitch by Julia Leonard. The twenty-five fifteen-line sections that comprise this single long poem are printed recto with original calligraphic marks by Cheryl Jacobsen in blue on verso and along the end pages. Philip Levine’s signature appears on the limitation page.

A fine signed limited edition by Philip Levine, exceptionally scarce.
