In 1980, British television producers collaborated with Arthur C. Clarke and released the monumental 13-part series titled Arthur C. Clarke’s Mysterious World. By 1980, Clarke was considered one of the greatest science fiction authors of all time, a member of the Big Three alongside Robert Heinlein and Isaac Asimov. Clarke’s many sci fi classics, including Childhood’s End and The City and the Stars, had become generational bestsellers. 2001: Space Odyssey and his film adaptation continues to be one of the most popular of the genre. So, when the television series aired, it saw widespread popularity with dedicated viewers tuning in each week. Episodes featured Clarke as the introducer of the subject matter. At the end of each episode, he also provided a brief epilogue. Subjects ranged from close encounters to sea creatures to megalithic structures, making it a unique broadcast for its era. In this accompanying volume, producers Simon Welfare and John Fairley expound on each episode with more information, insight, images, and research. Just like the show, the text provides Clarke’s opening and closing commentary. It is a perhaps more lasting version of the production, one that collectors and readers can enjoy without the troubles of locating the rights to the show.
