Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. By Lewis Carroll. Illustrated by John Tenniel. Illustrated Edition. Heritage Press. Norwalk, circa 1970.

$55.00

Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland was an apparition in 1865, one foretelling the future of children’s literature. Its author, Lewis Carroll, enjoyed a sudden rise in acclaim with readers across the world enjoying the eccentric and whimsical qualities of his work. Carroll was also a successful mathematician, and while his narratives and poetry may seem absurd, there is usually a veiled logic to them. Several years later, he published the sequel, Through the Looking-Glass, which saw equal praise. Together the works have defined Carroll’s legacy, and they made a profound impact on children’s literature by showcasing how moral lessons need not be didactic, and that narratives for joy rather than education are equally valuable. Accompanying the text in this edition are illustrations by Sir John Tenniel–the same illustrations from the first edition. Tenniel’s wood engravings helped to popularize Carroll’s work in England, and as the Alice stories became internationally acclaimed, so too did Tenniel. This timeless contribution to children’s literature is wonderfully presented in this illustrated edition by the Heritage Press. It is sure to delight any admirer or collector of Alice in Wonderland.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the bright yellow cloth boards, fine with decorative bouquet to front board. Text block fine. Tenniel’s illustrations superb. With the original red slipcase, fine with only very minor fading.

A fine collector’s copy of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.
