Brave New World. By Aldous Huxley. Illustrated by Mara McAfee. Collector’s Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 1978.

$75.00

Aldous Huxley was a dizzyingly productive English author whose works cover nearly every genre, from fiction to philosophy to science. He had an outsized influence over 20th century science fiction as well as the 1960s psychedelic movement. He was nominated for the Nobel Prize nine times but never won it. His most celebrated literary contribution is without question Brave New World, a classic dystopian novel of remarkable genius. It is set in a future where people are engineered to fit into social hierarchies based on intellect. They are conditioned to accept their roles with banal pleasures, especially the fictional drug soma. Brave New World predicted many scientific advancements, including reproductive technologies and psychological conditioning. Often compared to George Orwell’s 1984, Brave New World ranks high (if not the highest) among 20th century dystopian fiction. This collector’s edition is part of the Easton Press 100 Greatest Books Ever Written series. Accompanying the text are illustrations by Mara McAfee. It is a spectacular rendition of Huxley’s classic.

This collector’s edition is in especially fine condition. In the original full leather boards with decorative 22kt gilt stamping. Raised bands. Gilt spine label. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. McAfee’s illustrations are superb.

An especially fine collector’s copy of Brave New World.
