Publius Ovidius Naso, the ancient Roman poet, remains one of the pillars of Western literature. Born 43 BC, he was a contemporary of Virgil and Horace, and in his lifetime, he was enormously popular, with ancient Romans recognizing him by line and image across the empire. He often wrote in elegiac couplets or hexameters with vivid imagery and incredible comedic and poignant timing. His epic poem Metamorphoses is usually considered his greatest and lasting work. It describes dozens of classic myths of transformation–all of which are interwoven, making Metamorphoses one of the most cohesive renditions of Roman mythology in the entire classical canon. This translation marks a high point in the publication history of Metamorphoses. The editor, Sir Samuel Garth, oversaw the translation work of some of the best poets of the late 17th and early 18th centuries, including John Gay, John Dryden, and Alexander Pope. It is hence one of the most sought-after English translations of Metamorphoses. This illustrated edition also contains Hans Erni’s spectacular etchings which pair wonderfully with the text.

This illustrated edition is in very good condition. In the original full cloth boards, elaborately red stamped with gilt spine label, very good with only minor fading and spots to spine. Text block fine. In the original slipcase, very good with only minor rubbing to edges and closed tears to spine and corner. This copy contains the publisher’s original Sandglass pamphlet laid in.

A very good collector’s copy of Ovid’s Metamorphoses.
