The Writings of Thomas Jefferson. Illustrated by Lynd Ward. Illustrated Edition. Heritage Press. Norwalk, circa 1975.

Thomas Jefferson looms large in American history as one of its foremost Founding Fathers. He was the third American president, a lifelong diplomat, a book collector, an architect, and a philosopher. Jefferson was one of the primary drafters of the Declaration of Independence and a leader in the conception of fundamental American ideals, such as individual liberty and democracy. Yet, ironically, Jefferson was also a slave owner who consistently apologized for that abhorred practice. He believed that America would expand to a largely agrarian, aristocratic society where landowners rather than merchants would dominate its economic and political landscape, a belief he used to justify slavery and the removal of Native people. But while history looks back on these mispredictions and horrific practices with disdain, there is no denying Jefferson’s consequential mark on American history–westward expansion would not have occurred without his Louisiana Purchase; the University of Virginia owes its beginnings to Jefferson who founded the institution in 1819; the success of the American Revolution can largely be seen as a success of Jefferson’s political philosophies. Therefore, in a sense, all of American history–the good and the bad–can be traced back to Thomas Jefferson. In this collection of his writings, editors have provided a range of Jefferson’s work that showcases his influence over many spheres of history and culture. Jefferson was a prolific writer of correspondence and public addresses, and so many of these consequential texts are provided here. Alongside them are Lynd Ward’s spectacular illustrations. For any American history collector, it is a crucial volume.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original half cloth boards, fine with maroon stamping to front board and gilt lettering to spine. Text block fine, Ward’s illustrations superb. This copy contains the publisher’s original pamphlet laid in. In the original slipcase, very good with only some spots and fading.

A fine collector’s copy of The Writings of Thomas Jefferson.
