Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Translated by Edward Fitzgerald. Illustrated by Edmund Dulac. Illustrated Edition. Garden City Books. New York, 1952.

$46.00

Omar Khayyam, the astronomer-poet of Persia who lived and wrote in the Middle Ages, became a resurgent force in Western culture when Edward Fitzgerald translated his quatrains. While not an immediate success, Fitzgerald managed to market his translation and add to subsequent editions until the reading public and critics became fascinated with the philosophic and linguistic brilliance of the work. It has subsequently become one of the most adored collections of poetry for generations. This illustrated edition is a complete reprint of the first edition and combined third, fourth, and fifth editions. It contains Edmund Dulac’s full-page color illustrations, largely considered the best of any edition of the Rubaiyat.

This illustrated edition is in fine condition. In the original white boards and spine, especially fine with elaborate gilt stamping and color floral patterns. Text block fine, Dulac’s illustrations superb. In the original dust jacket, near fine with only minor rubbing to edges and price clipped.

A fine illustrated edition of the Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam.
