Treasure Island. By Robert Louis Stevenson. Illustrated by Edward A. Wilson. Collector’s Edition. Easton Press. Norwalk, 1994.

$65.00

Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island, first published in book form in 1883, is perhaps his most popular work. The grand pirate adventure is responsible for many of our cultural associations with pirates, such as “X marks the spot,” their usual hideouts among lost tropical islands, the Black Spot, and so on. The novel also gave us some of the most memorable pirate characters, including Long John Silver, Billy Bones, and Jim Hawkins. For all this and Stevenson’s exhilarating plot, Treasure Island is a beloved classic, one read and reread by children and adults over several generations. This collector’s edition by the Easton Press is a spectacular presentation of the text. It pairs the work with illustrations by Edward A. Wilson, a pupil of the acclaimed Howard Pyle. It is part of Easton Press’s “100 Greatest Books Ever Written” series.

This collector’s edition is in fine condition. In original ocean blue leather boards, elaborately gilt stamped, especially fine. Raised bands. Gilt edges. Text block fine. Silk moire endpapers and bookmark sewn in. Wilson’s illustrations are a handsome contribution to the narrative.

An exceptionally fine collector’s copy of the great pirate adventure.
