The Sun Also Rises. By Ernest Hemingway. Illustrations by Stan Hunter. Limited Edition. Franklin Library. Franklin Center, 1977.

$80.00

The Sun Also Rises was Hemingway’s first published novel and in many ways his best work. A brilliant example of minimalist writing, The Sun Also Rises immediately set Hemingway apart from his contemporaries and defined the Lost Generation that was largely the subject of the novel. Set in France and Spain in the 1920s, the work follows a group of expatriates as they attempt to enjoy the cultural richness of Europe as well as each other’s company. On one level, it is a love story between the protagonist Jake Barnes and the lustrous Lady Brett Ashley–two of Hemingway’s best characters. Yet on another level, it is a larger commentary on the experiences of expatriation and the Lost Generation’s disillusionment with nationalist and conservative values, the Industrial Revolution, and marriage. Often cited as one of the best novels ever written, The Sun Also Rises is a defining work of Modernist fiction and the keystone volume of Hemingway’s canon.

This limited edition is in fine condition. In the original brown leather boards, especially fine with raised bands and elaborate gilt stamping. Text block fine. Gilt edges. Raised bands. Silk moire endpapers. Silk bookmark sewn in. Hunter’s illustrations are a fine pairing with the text.
