John le Carré, pen name of David John Moore Cornwell, was a British author whose espionage novels rank among the best ever written. His literary career began in the 1960s when he was also working as an MI5 and MI6 agent. Through these experiences, le Carré was able to craft genius espionage narratives that were in many ways authentic, or at least deeply informed by the true nature of espionage work. His most popular protagonist, George Smiley, is a quintessential example. Unlike many other spies in fiction, Smiley is realistic in his unassuming demeanor–a behavioral strategy that often shrouds his cunning and ruthless espionage goals. Smiley appears in several of le Carré’s novels. In this volume, The Honourable Schoolboy, he is forced to combat institutional pressures against his spy agency and pursue his nemesis, Karla. It is the second installment in the Karla Trilogy. Published in the latter half of le Carré’s career, The Honourable Schoolboy showcases some of his masterful, honed talent.

This limited first edition is in fine condition. In the original tan leather boards, especially fine with raised bands and elaborate gilt stamping. Text block fine. Gilt edges.
