The Bridge of San Luis Rey. By Thornton Wilder. Signed by Illustrator Jean Charlot. Signed Limited Edition. Number 727 of Only 1,500 Copies. Limited Editions Club. New York, 1962.

$85.00

American novelist and playwright Thornton Wilder was a triumph of literature in the mid-twentieth century. He produced dozens of plays, several novels, a film, and numerous essays. He won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama twice–first for Our Town in 1938 and second for The Skin of Our Teeth in 1942. He also won the Pulitzer Prize for the Novel after the international success of The Bridge of San Luis Rey in 1927. It is still today his most recognized work of prose, a brilliantly crafted narrative from multiple points of view, describing a fatal bridge collapse in Peru. This signed limited edition pairs Wilder’s five-part narrative with spectacular color illustrations by Jean Charlot, making it a vibrant and engaging representation of the text. Charlot was a French-born painter and illustrator who expatriated to the United States and Mexico in the 20th century. He is an instrumental figure in the Mexican Mural Movement. This LEC volume is considered his best work of book illustration.

This signed limited edition is in fine condition. In the original leather spine and cloth boards, fine with decorative black and gilt stamp to boards. Spine label gilt stamped, still bright. Text block fine. Jean Charlot’s signature on the colophon. With the publisher’s original slipcase, fine.

An especially fine LEC signed limited edition of The Bridge of San Luis Rey.
