$200.00

First published in 1845, The Raven saw immediate acclaim and turned Edgar Allan Poe into a national celebrity. It is one of the most celebrated poems in American literature. Even today, people all over the world can recognize The Raven by its opening line–”Once upon a midnight dreary”–or by reference to the lost Lenore, nevermore. In the first year of publication, it circulated in several periodicals then saw widespread anthologization well into the 1850s. It also saw many illustrated editions, but perhaps none is so widely praised as Eduoard Manet’s spectacular version paired with the original English text and the French translation. It was published in 1875 and is considered a turning point in the history of illustrated books, an early example of livre d’artiste. It was printed on the finest paper as a large folio, and there were less than 250 copies produced with fewer still signed and numbered by the artist and illustrator. This is a facsimile of the 1875 copy housed by the Library of Congress. It commemorates this incredible work of book arts, matching its size and scale with Manet’s spectacular lithographs and both English and French versions of the text. For collectors of illustration and book history, it is a wonderful alternative to the virtually unobtainable 1875 edition, but any admirer of Poe’s genius would surely love this astounding volume.

This facsimile edition is in fine condition. Large folio (measures  21 x 14 inches).  In the publisher’s original faux-leather spine and marble printed boards, very nearly fine with only minute rubbing to corners and faux leather showing one unglued portion. Text block fine, Manet’s lithographs superb. This copy contains the publisher’s original pamphlet and bookplate still blank, both laid in.

A scarce facsimile of an even scarcer important illustrated edition of The Raven.
