The Night Before Christmas. By Clement C. Moore. Illustrated by Arthur Rackham. Illustrated Edition, Later Printing. Lippincott. Philadelphia, circa 1960.

$35.00

First published in 1823, “A Visit from St. Nicholas”–or, as it has come to be known, “The Night Before Christmas”–is the preeminent classic of Christmas poetry. It is often credited with our modern conceptions and traditions surrounding Santa Claus. Its author, Clement Clarke Moore, conceived of his Santa Claus at a time when Christmas traditions were forming and the holiday was becoming a favored winter celebration. This illustrated edition presents the work beautifully. It contains Arthur Rackham’s adored pen and ink drawings as well as full color plates. Rackham, the great British illustrator, produced numerous illustrated works. The Night Before Christmas is one of his best. He is considered by many to be the greatest artist of the British Golden Age of book illustration.

This illustrated edition, later printing is in very good condition. In the original red cloth boards, very good with only minor rubbing and fading to front board and edges. Text block near fine, only foxing to front matter. No date given. Without the original dust jacket.

A very good illustrated edition of The Night Before Christmas.
