John Cheever was an American genius of short fiction. He is easily one of the best story writers of all time. His works earned him numerous awards, including a Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, a National Medal for Literature, and a National Book Award. He had a keen understanding of conflicted inner lives, making his characters flawed, lucid, and relatable. In The Brigadier and the Golf Widow, Cheever brings together sixteen stories which had been previously published in The New Yorker. These stories were drafted at the height of his career. It is one of his best story collections and a necessary volume for any Cheever collector.

This first edition, first printing is in about-fine condition. In the original black cloth, near fine with only minor fading to head of boards and spine. Text block near fine, only former owner’s bookplate on front endpaper and pencil mark to back endpaper. In the original dust jacket, very good with only chips to edges.

An about-fine first edition of John Cheever’s story collection.
