The Beach. By Alex Garland. First American Edition, First Printing. Riverhead. New York, 1997.

$43.00

Alex Garland is a novelist and film producer who has received numerous accolades over the last several decades. His first novel, The Beach, was a breakout bestseller. His other works include The Tesseract and The Coma. Yet while these works are still widely praised, Garland is probably more well known for his films. His screenplay credits include 28 Days Later and Never Let Me Go. He also wrote and directed Ex Machina, Annihilation, and Men. This illustrious career started with The Beach, a novel considered a Gen-X classic and a modern homage to Lord of the Flies. Its narrator, Richard, is a reticent, lonely backpacker in Thailand who connects with fellow tourists and finds a secluded island colony of like-minded travelers. At first, the community shares an idyllic experience, but as interpersonal conflicts escalate and the harsh realities of living off the land and ocean compound stress, the situation becomes increasingly dangerous. Suspenseful, lucid, and thought-provoking, The Beach is a rare example of a page turner that showcases literary prowess. It was adapted to film several years after publication, starring Leonardo DiCaprio.

This first American edition, first printing is in near fine condition. In the original half cloth boards with the mosquito embossing to front board, fine. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, near fine with only minor rubbing and marks to glossy silver front flap. Dust jacket scarce in this condition.

A first American edition of Alex Garland’s cult classic, scarcely in such excellent condition.
