Drums. By James Boyd. Illustrated by N.C. Wyeth. First Illustrated Trade Edition. Scribners. New York, 1928.

$90.00

James Boyd was an American author in the first half of the twentieth century. Drums is without question his most famous work. It is a young adult novel set during the American Revolution and it captures the inner conflict of its protagonist, Johnny Fraser, as he grows up to support independence after a childhood loyal to the crown. While the work is still considered a classic of young adult historical fiction, it is N.C. Wyeth’s illustrations that are most praised. They were published as part of the second edition of Drums, and they remain iconic examples of N.C. Wyeth’s artistic genius. A member of the Brandywine School and arguably Howard Pyle’s best pupil, Wyeth illustrated dozens of children’s classics. He is also the father of Andrew Wyeth, an equally brilliant painter who made a lasting mark on American arts.

This first illustrated trade edition is in very good condition. In the original full cloth boards with illustrated pastedown to front board, very good with only minor chips and rubbing. Text block near fine. Wyeth’s illustrations throughout, both pen and ink as well as full-page color plates. Illustrated endpapers. Deckled fore edge. Without the scarce original dust jacket. Preceded only by the signed limited first illustrated edition.

A terrific volume containing some of N.C. Wyeth’s best work.
