The Night Before Christmas. By Clement Clarke Moore. Illustrations by Ethel Hays. Illustrated Edition. Saalfield Publishing. Akron, circa 1930.

$40.00

First published in 1823, “A Visit from St. Nicholas”–or, as it has come to be known, “The Night Before Christmas”–is the preeminent classic of Christmas poetry. It is often credited with our modern conceptions and traditions surrounding Santa Claus. Its author, Clement Clarke Moore, conceived of his Santa Claus at a time when Christmas traditions were forming and the holiday was becoming a favored winter celebration. This antique illustrated edition is one of many published by the Saalfield Publishing Company. They produced numerous children’s books and holiday ephemera from the late 1800s to the 1970s. This edition, with the publisher’s number 688, was printed circa 1930. It is illustrated by Ethel Hays, one of the most successful cartoonists and children’s book illustrators of the 1920s and 30s. Her work makes this edition particularly unique. It is also unique among Saalfield editions because it is cut to the shape of Santa Claus’s pipe smoke, and it has a hole punched through it for hanging as a Christmas ornament.

This illustrated edition is in good condition. In the original stapled wrappers, good with some creases and rubbing to edges. Sound without tears. Text near fine, only minor dampstain to second leaf. Splendidly illustrated.

A wonderful antique printing of “The Night Before Christmas”.
