Jamaica Kincaid is an Antiguan-American author whose short fiction is widely anthologized and whose novels are critically acclaimed. She left Antigua for New York as a teen to work for a host family. This move was at the behest of her mother, but Kincaid quickly found her way out of her menial job and began writing. Her work is loosely autobiographical. She often toys with genre conventions. Her prose is rich yet accessible. Social and political commentary sometimes intercede where plot is limited. Her short story, “Girl”, is one of the most anthologized contemporary stories of the last 50 years. This novel, See Now Then, is one of her more recent works. It met mixed reviews with critics sometimes skeptical about its structure. Yet readers tend to appreciate the work. It is a story of a New England marriage gone stale by the banal proceedings of life. Some readers have suggested it is based off Kincaid’s own marriage, but she publicly denies it.

This first edition, first printing is in about-fine condition. In the original red cloth boards, fine. Text block fine. In the original dust jacket, about-fine with small closed tear to head of spine and closed tear and creasing to one corner.

An about-fine first edition of Jamaica Kincaid’s most recent novel.
