The Return of the Native. By Thomas Hardy. Illustrations by Ben F. Wohlberg. Illustrated Edition. Franklin Library. Franklin Center, 1980.

Thomas Hardy sits in the league of the most important Victorian novelists, alongside Charles Dickens and George Eliot. His work also influenced generations of authors after him, including JD Salinger, DH Lawrence, and Ezra Pound, to name just a few. His brand of realism investigated fate against the backdrop of a socially stratified Britain. Some of his most influential works include Far From the Madding Crowd and Tess of the d’Ubervilles, and also The Return of the Native, with the latter seeing its greatest praise in the twentieth century. Initially, readers felt uneasy about the novel’s flawed heroine, tragic outlook, and odd characters, so much so that Hardy changed his ending in the serialized editions to make the work more palatable. For his successors, however, the qualities of the work which repelled initial readers were the aspects most widely praised, and today it is often cited as a classic of misfits and the ways their communities attempt to cordon them off or stifle their idiosyncrasies. Among Hardy’s works, there is perhaps none more modern and endearing.
