Sonnets from the Portuguese. By Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Calligraphy by Valenti Angelo. Heritage Club Edition, First Printing. Heritage Press. New York, 1938.

$58.00

Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s Sonnets from the Portuguese have remained tremendously popular since their first publication in the Victorian Era. The 44 sonnets included in the collection were considered by many, including Browning’s husband, fellow poet Robert Browning, to be the best love sonnets written since Shakespeare. This 1938 volume by the Heritage Press presents these poems in full page with Valenti Angelo’s striking calligraphy. It is one of the best representations of Browning’s work.

This copy is a lovely folio in the original beige cloth boards. It is in fine condition. Textblock fine, edges dyed green. In the scarce original slipcase, good with tears, chips, and a missing bottom edge.

A fine copy and beautiful presentation of Elizabeth Barrett Browning’s most celebrated work.
