Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard. By Thomas Gray. Wood Engravings by Agnes Miller Parker. Illustrated Edition. Heritage Press. New York, 1951.

$20.00

A timeless meditation on death, Elegy Written in a Country Church-Yard is one of the most well-known poems in English. Thomas Gray penned the work in 1750, and Horace Walpole, his friend and fellow writer, helped to popularize it. This 1951 Heritage Press Edition paces the poem with one line per page. Each line is presented next to one of Agnes Miller Parker’s wood engravings. Interestingly, Parker sketched the engravings at the same churchyard in Stoke Poges where Gray wrote the poem. The result is a powerful synthesis of text and image, and an overall terrific representation of the work.

In the original blue boards, near-fine with only minor spot to back board. Silver debossing to front board fine. Text block fine, illustrations fine. In the scarce original slipcase.

A near-fine Heritage Press edition.
