Jack Thorp published the first edition of Songs of the Cowboys in 1908. It was a thin volume, printed on rough stock, and bound in red paper. Comprised of songs he had learned as a cowboy in New Mexico, Thorp’s work is the first known collection of cowboy songs in print. Some of the songs he included are iconic now, such as “The Streets of Laredo”, “Buffalo Range”, and “Little Joe, the Wrangler”. This third edition includes Austin and Alta Fife’s comprehensive commentary, notes, and variants, as well as a thorough cowboy lexicon. This edition was published in the 1960s as country, rock, and folk genres were developing a newfound appreciation for cowboy songs.

This third edition, second printing is in very good condition. In the original cloth boards, fine. Text block near fine, only former owner’s signature to endpaper. In the original dust jacket, very good with only small spot to spine, rubbing and chipping to edges. Preceded by the scarce 1908 first edition, a 1921 second edition, and, by only a few months, the first printing of the third edition by Bramhall House.

An authoritative text on classic cowboy songs.
