Future Home of the Living God. By Louise Erdrich. Signed Limited First Edition, First Printing. HarperCollins. New York, 2017.

$40.00

Louise Erdrich has steadily published exceptional fiction for the last four decades. The success of her first novel, Love Medicine, all but guaranteed her a writer’s life. Yet her recognition as one of the best American writers of the era has been slow to follow. In the last 10 years, however, she has won both the National Book Award for Fiction and the Pulitzer Prize, and literary historians are at once placing her (rightfully so) among America’s greatest writers. Future Home of the Living God is a beautiful and unexpected contribution to her body of work. Like other Erdrich novels, it tells the story of an Ojibwe woman who grapples with her cultural history, her family, and her colonized country. But the work can also be compared to Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, because it possesses a heavy element of speculative thriller. It is set in a future where “evolution stops” and “pregnancy and childbearing quickly become issues of state security” (front flap). This forces the main character, Cedar, to endure her own pregnancy with the added challenges of a deeply patriarchal, collapsing social system, and nothing but herself and her Native roots to support her.

This signed limited first edition is in fine condition. Erdrich’s signature is gently scrawled on the limitation page. In the original blue cloth boards, fine. The text block is especially fine and tight. In the original blue dust jacket, fine with only the publisher’s “signed first edition” sticker.

A signed limited first edition of one of Erdrich’s most captivating novels.
